Mid-rehearsal cycle, the students and I were drafting a narrative to describe the meaning of the dance portion of “Gallic Overture”. We did this to help shape our articulations, dynamics and phrasing as well as enrich our experience and intention as musicians, giving meaning to each run-through of performance. On the concert, the students exceeded expectations, incorporating nuanced expression to “tell the story” of their line, whether it be primary or supporting material. Their performance of Gallic Overture was a demonstration of the culmination of our work on intonation, expression and intention manifest in musicianship. It was an honor to perform with them.
