2019 Spring Concert: Together

9-10 Choir – Conductor: Audrey Duncan

Unclouded Day

We open tonight’s concert with eyes turned upwards, boldly unwavering, singing of the future to come. Unsullied blue skies, our hope shines as the sun, down upon us on this perfect Unclouded Day.

Month of Maying – Morley Arr. Shaw

Sun-kissed and emboldened, we sing to spirits and friends; frolicking and shenanigans abound with the joys of spring and companionship in the Month of Maying.

John the Revelator – Traditional Blues arr. Caldwell / Ivory

In our knowledge, joy is sobered and the inevitable is foreseen. Hope, despair, disbelief but then triumph are heralded unapologetically by John the Revelator.

Wind Ensemble – Conductor: Audrey Duncan

Prelude in B♭ – Bach arr. Moehlmann

A stately display of contrast, balance, precision and pacing, the Prelude in Bb is a delightful showcase of the elegance of Baroque music.

Suite in F (Mvmt. I and IV) by Gustav Holst

I. March and IV. Fantasia on “Dargason”

Holst, a school teacher, was inspired by his students’ endless sense of play. Written in 1911, the Second Suite in F, is a canonic display of the virtues of wind band – facility, agility, warmth, strength and power. The I. “March” contrasts delightful, rolicking folks melodies in 6/8 with military band march style. IV. Fantasia on a “Dargason” is an engaging display polymeter, with folk tunes in 3/4 and 6/8 layered together.

Tshotsholoza “Go Forward” – Conducted by Audrey Duncan

On this journey one by one we came together to make this family, community, and culture. Our time is full of memories, laughter, awkwardness and joy. We labored to create something more than the sum of our many parts. Together go forward whole.

At the close of the previous ensemble, the 9-10 Choir members spread out around the theater, and select wind ensemble students were situated in the balcony level with the rest behind the audience. Joining as a mass ensemble, the wind and orchestra students joined in, inviting the audience to celebrate with us.
